Erika Davis Sears is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Section of Plastic
Surgery, at the University of Michigan Medical School; staff surgeon at the Ann Arbor VA; and health services researcher at the VA Ann Arbor Center for Clinical Management Research.
After graduating from Marion High School, she attended Northwestern University, McCormick School of Engineering, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical
Engineering in 2002. She then received her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2006 from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed residency training in plastic surgery and hand surgery fellowship in 2015. She also completed a two-year research fellowship as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar, where she earned a Master’s in Health Services Research from the University of Michigan.
Her clinical focus is in hand surgery and
reconstructive plastic surgery, caring for patients of all ages with trauma or functional problems involving the upper extremity. She is particularly proud to provide exceptional care for Veterans with hand problems and reconstructive needs at the Ann Arbor VA. She also took part in a medical mission in Cartagena, Colombia, that provided surgical care to nearly 60 patients with congenital anomalies and traumatic injuries.
As a health services researcher, her research focuses on improving the efficiency and value of surgical care and appropriate use of diagnostic tests. To date, she has published 38 peer-reviewed research studies and has been awarded seven research grants from medical society foundations or federal agencies. Most recently she received a five-year Career Development Award grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs to evaluate and improve the value of surgical care for veterans. She was also the recipient of the Bernard G. Sarnat Excellence in Grant Writing Award from the Plastic Surgery Foundation and the J. Leonard Goldner Pioneer Award from the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand.
She is also actively involved in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows, with a particular passion for supporting the development and growth of women and under-represented minorities in the field of surgery.
She is a proud mother of two sons (Noah and Cameron), wife, and daughter of MHS grads (Rodney and Cathy (Melendez) Davis, Class of `73.
