Sharon Dunwoody, Marion High School Class of 1965, is a professor emerita at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and award-winning researcher in the field of science communication.
Dunwoody earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University in 1969 and, after a stint as a science writer in Texas and Pennsylvania, returned to school to earn a master’s in mass communication from Temple University in 1975 and her Ph.D. in the same field from IU in 1978. Since then, she has become a lauded researcher and teacher, energizing a new field of research, science communication, while looking at the role of science, environment and health messages in mass media and the impact on public understanding of science. In addition to authoring or coauthoring more than 50 journal articles and more than 30 book chapters, she has written, co-written or co-edited five books.
She taught science journalism and communication for more than 30 years at the University of Wisconsin- Madison and also served as director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and as an associate dean in the UW-Madison Graduate School. She previously was on the faculty of the Ohio State University School of Journalism.
She has been a Fulbright Distinguished Lecturer in Brazil, a visiting fellow at Deakin University in Australia, and Donnier Guest Professor at Stockholm University. She was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society for Risk Analysis, and the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research. She also has served as president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research.
Dunwoody was the first woman to earn the Paul J. Deutschmann Award for Excellence in Research from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She also was honored with the University of Wisconsin’s Hilldale Award, which recognizes distinguished contributions to teaching, research, and service. She has also been selected to receive the Wayne Danielson Award for Distinguished Contributions to Communication Research in October 2016 from the University of Texas at Austin.
