Keys is the only Marion girls’ basketball player to have her number retired following an outstanding four-year career culminating with Indiana Miss Basketball honors in 1982. She helped lead the Giants to their only two state final four appearances in 1980 and ‘81 and finished with 1,392 points.
The 6-foot Keys was part of Marion teams that went unbeaten in the regular season and won North Central Conference championships in ‘80 and ‘81. As a senior, Keys set the single-game scoring record with 39 points and single-season scoring record, averaging more than 24 points a game.
Marion just missed out on a third consecutive state finals appearance, losing in the Fort Wayne Semistate championship game. Keys was a runaway winner for Miss Basketball and also made the Parade Magazine All-America team. She remains the only Marion girls’ basketball player accorded those honors. She was also a member of the 1982 Indiana All-Star team.
Following high school, Keys starred for Notre Dame University teams from 1982-86 and graduated as the Irish’s all-time leading scorer with 1,589 points. More than 25 years later, she still ranks among the top 10 in career points, career scoring average and field goals made. She was the Irish’s team captain in 1985-86 and most valuable player of the North Star Conference.
After basketball, Keys went into business and held management positions with Proctor & Gamble, PepsiCo and QTG Sales Inc. Keys resided in Chicago.
