Jones was the driving force of Marion’s “Purple Reign” teams with his polished point guard skills and was named co-Indiana Mr. Basketball with teammate Jay Edwards in 1987 following the Giants’ third straight state championship.
A four-year varsity player, Jones was a solidly-built 6-foot-2 with exceptional penetrating ability and a deadly pull-up jump shooter. Although he often deferred the scoring to others, namely Edwards, Jones had a great performance in the 1986 Fort Wayne Semistate with 35- and 33-point games in leading the Giants to a hard-earned title.
Jones set the all-time scoring record for the final two rounds of the state tournament and finished his Marion career with 1,711 points, which in 2014 ranks third on the all-time list. Marion teams went 85-4 during Jones’ final three years with three North Central Conference titles in addition to its state tournament success.
He was a member of the 1987 Indiana All-Star squad and was named an All-American in several publications.
Jones also was accomplished in international competition, helping the United States to the gold medals in the Junior Olympic Games while in high school and the 1989 World University Games. From Marion, Jones played four years for Bob Knight at Indiana University and helped the Hoosiers win Big Ten titles in 1989 and ‘91.
After college, Jones played professionally for two years in the Continental Basketball Association for the Fort Wayne Fury and Youngstown Pride. Jones held various business management positions after his playing career ended and resided with his family in Fishers, Ind.
